In this short video, Nina Buchan introduces the September 2020 issue of Specialised Medicine.
Welcome to the September issue of Specialised Medicine, the leading publication on specialised services. Suspension of screening, diagnosis, and treatment while the health service prioritised the response to COVID-19 may lead to the early deaths of thousands of patients. In this issue, Alastair Whitington, Consultant Editor for Specialised Medicine, interviews experts in specialised healthcare to determine the impacts of COVID-19 on their specialties and the actions necessary for recovery.
Also in this issue, Amit Patel and Johnny Skillicorn-Aston discuss the role of community pharmacy in the response to COVID-19 and beyond, and Alex Warren, Nicola Symes, and Alain Vuylsteke champion extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a life-saving therapy for adults with acute respiratory failure. In addition, we report from the Westminster Health Forum on the future of commissioning in England, and Martin Bradley clarifies the uncertainties surrounding innovative histology-independent cancer treatments in Medicines Corner.
Finally, we are delighted to announce that Specialised Medicine will partner with the UK Oncology Forum for their 2020 event—a virtual meeting of international cancer experts intended to educate and update the UK oncology community. Specialised Medicine will be bringing you highlights from their 2020 event later in the year, and further projects with the UK Oncology Forum are in the pipeline—watch this space.
